The shortest day of the year is pagan.

Unlocked the World: Where are the “Winter” 21:48 UTC Daylight Saving Time Changes Every Day During the Cold Dark Ages?

The weekly newsletter from CNN Travel called “unlocked the world” is an editor’s note. Receive news of destinations opening, inspiration for future adventures, the latest in aviation, food and drink, and other travel developments.

The date of the wintery season varies from year to year, but usually occurs on December 21. The solar year doesn’t match up to our calendar year, so the date of the sunrise and sunset can be changed.

People in balmy Singapore , just 137 kilometers or 85 miles north of the equator, barely notice the difference, with just nine fewer minutes of daylight than they have during the summer solstice. It’s a full day, giving or taking a few minutes, all year long.

Below are some examples of when 21:48 UTC will be for various local times in places around the world. The vast majority of Asia will be in the opposite time zone on December 22nd for the winter solstice.

• Tokyo: 6:48 a.m. Thursday• Hanoi, Vietnam: 4:48 a.m. New Delhi starts at 3:18 a.m. Friday: 11:02 a.m. Thursday• Jerusalem: 11:48 p.m. The time of the event was 10:48 p.m. Wednesday• Charlotte, North Carolina: 4:48 p.m. Wednesday• Winnipeg, Manitoba: 3:48 p.m. Wednesday• San Francisco: 1:48 p.m. Wednesday is Honolulu at 11:48 a.m. Wednesday.

The difference is more stark in frigid Oslo, Norway , where the sun will rise at 9:18 a.m. and set at 3:12 p.m., resulting in less than six hours of anemic daylight. Sun lamp, anyone?

Nome, Alaska will have just 3 hours and 54 minutes and 31 seconds of very weak daylight. That’s generous, when compared to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. It sits inside the Arctic Circle and won’t see a single ray of sunshine.

The Seasons of Change in Earth’s Motion: Christmas, Hanukkah and Macroscopic “Alban Arthan” as a Light of Winter

Because Earth is tilted on its rotational axis, we have changing seasons. As the planet moves around the sun, each hemisphere experiences winter when it’s tilted away from the sun and summer when it’s tilted toward the sun.

Scientists are not entirely sure how this occurred, but they think that billions of years ago, as the solar system was taking shape, the Earth was subject to violent collisions that caused the axis to tilt.

It’s no surprise many cultures and religions celebrate a holiday — whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or pagan festivals — that coincides with the return of longer days.

The first day of winter is marked by elaborate ceremonies and celebrations by ancient people who relied on accurate knowledge of the seasonal cycles. Spiritually, these celebrations symbolize the opportunity for renewal.

Kennedy said that the early founders of the Christian church disapproved of certain practices of these holidays, but they continued to be popular. Even if there is no particular date for Jesus’ birth in the Gospels, the Christmas holiday is still observed by Christians at the same time in the calendar.

In the Welsh language, “Alban Arthan” means light of winter. It may be the oldest seasonal festival in the world. Part of Druidic traditions, the winter solstice is considered a time of death and rebirth.

The Winter Solstice and the Daylan-Pentzance Processional for Cornwall, England, and other places around the UK (not just the ecliptic ball)

The people enjoyed carnival-like festivities that were similar to the modern version of Mardi Gras. Slaves were given temporary freedom and moral restrictions were loosened. The third and fourth centuries were the years during whichSaturnalia continued.

They thought this was the apex of yin (from Chinese medicine theory). The longest day of winter is Yin because it represents darkness and cold. The return is marked by the slow ascendance of light and warmth. Dumplings are usually eaten to celebrate in some East Asian cultures.

Better known for pirates than the solstice, the town of Penzance on the southwest coast of England revived the delightful tradition of a Cornish processional — along with dancing, mask-wearing, singing and more.

The UK has the most famous site for this time of year. On the winter solstice, visitors traditionally enter the towering, mysterious stone circle for a sunrise ceremony run by local pagan and druid groups.

There are celebrations of the Winter solstice in several parts ofCanada, including the Winter Lantern Festival on Vancouver’s Island.

To picture what is happening in space during a winter solstice, start by thinking of a giant glass ball surrounding the Earth, and let’s ignore the planet’s rotation (which complicates everything). Daylan says, “If you look at the three-dimensional sphere that’s around us, known as the celestial sphere, the sun as well as all other solar system objects move through a plane in this celestial sphere, known as the ecliptic plane.”

He says the sun changes its declination while doing so. The main axes of the sphere are declination and right ascension. In this reference frame, the sun is at its most southern location during winter when it is the winter solstice.

Introduction to Space Flight: The Basics of Space Flight and the Meaning of the Earth-Sun System, the Sun, and the Cosmological Constant

The basics of space flight has a section with illustrations for those that would enjoy exploring the idea further.

The low position of the sun during a winter solstice will cause your midday shadow to be exceptionally long. A solstice doesn’t have much meaning in regards to the larger universe.

“The solstices are defined with respect to the Earth-sun system, not necessarily the whole solar system. We attach a lot of meaning to it because the sun is so sacred for us, and its location on the celestial sphere, as a function of time throughout the year, is very important,” Daylan says. The climate is set by it. It tells us when the crops will mature. So that’s very important, especially to historical civilizations.”
