The House speaker votes on a topic, the FBI says that the New Orleans attack suspect acted alone

New Orleans Police say Shamsud-Din Jabbar threw a pickup truck into a crowd on New Year’s Day

The FBI says Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the driver who rammed a pickup truck into a crowd in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, acted alone. At least 14 people died in the attack, and the agency said that it was not solely responsible for it.

Christopher Raia, an FBI deputy assistant director with the agency’s counterterrorism division, told reporters that they do not think anyone else is involved in the attack.

Raia said that there is no evidence to suggest that he was assisted in this attack by anyone, since they are combing through five electronic devices, three cellphones and two laptops.

The FBI believes it was more than one person who was likely involved in the attack and is searching for additional suspects who may have aided in the attack.

Police said that around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday, he sped around a roadblock at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets before heading back onto Bourbon. He continued for over three blocks down Bourbon Street, crossing Iberville Street and Bienville Street, and crashing just before Conti Street. Jabbar then exited the pickup and fired at police officers, injuring two. Police said that the injured officers were in stable condition.

The New Orleans Attack: Reopening Bourbon Street to Pedestrians After the Speeding Rampage and The Sugar Bowl Moved

Bourbon Street was reopened to pedestrians on Thursday, one day after it was closed to investigate. Fourteen yellow roses have been placed on the sidewalk near Canal Street as a makeshift memorial for each of those killed in the speeding rampage.

The Sugar Bowl was scheduled to be played in New Orleans on Wednesday night but was moved to Thursday afternoon.

The governor told reporters that additional types of assets were deployed in the city, after they were asked about security measures ahead of the game.

“I don’t like to give specifics because I don’t like to tell the enemy what we got,” he said. “We are in better shape than we were before, but I can’t say that yet,” he said. “An unprecedented amount of law enforcement resources are being utilized to finalize the investigation,” he said.

Raia said there is currently no connection between the attack in New Orleans and the bomb blast in Las Vegas, in which the suspect was killed in the vehicle.

Jabbar, A.M., a man with a discharge from the U.S. Army and his current position as a Human Resource Specialist

The FBI said that the man was discharged from the army because of his U.S. citizenship. He also served as a Human Resource Specialist and Information Technology Specialist from March 2007 until January 2015 and then in the Army Reserve as an IT Specialist until July 2020, an Army spokesperson confirmed to NPR. He served in Afghanistan for more than a year after deployment in February 2009. He left the service with the rank of staff sergeant.

The FBI completed the search of Jabbar’s home in Houston Thursday morning and said in a post on social media that there is “no threat to residents” in the area. The Texas Newsroom said that a next door neighbor described the suspect as quiet and that their interactions were normal.

A new Congress is expected to be sworn in today. The first order of business in the House is to elect a speaker. Republicans have a small majority, so they need to almost unanimously decide on a leader. House Speaker Mike Johnson has the endorsement of President-elect Donald Trump, but he faces the challenge of some GOP holdouts.
