The Shooting of a 19-year-old Man at the Mall of America: A Minneapolis Shooting, Lockdown, and Multiple Arrests in St. Louis Park

A 19-year-old man was killed Friday in a shooting during an altercation at the Mall of America in Minnesota, the nation’s largest shopping and entertainment center, police said.

A nearby Bloomington police officer — one of 16 stationed at the mall that day — heard the gunshots around 7:50 p.m. The officer tried life-saving measures but was unable to save the victim.

The 30-year-old mall, about 10 miles south of downtown Minneapolis, has more than 500 stores, more than 50 dining options, dozens of attractions and two hotels, according to the owners.

“We have an incident where if someone decides that they want to pull out a gun and shoot somebody with complete lack of disrespect for human life, I still don’t know what we can do to stop that,” Hodges said.

There were gunshots going off in the background as a singer was filming at Gucci inside of the mall.

The team is staying in a hotel that is close to Minneapolis where they will play against the Vikings. Giants spokesperson Pat Hanlon told the Associated Press on Friday that the players who were at the mall during the shooting had made it back to the hotel, and that everyone had been accounted for.

He blamed the mall of America on Friday. “Shooting in mall. There was a lock-down at TwinCitiesGrill. Two gunmen at least one victim.” An hour later, Papa said, “Safely out of mall and back at hotel. Prayers for the victim.

Police in Bloomington said that five people were arrested in relation to the death of a 19-year-old man at the Mall of America.

The Bloomington Police Department announced the arrest of people in connection with the Friday night shooting during an evening news conference, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

According to the Star Tribune, the two 18-year-olds and three 17-year-old males arrested were taken into custody in the morning in St. Louis Park, after being contacted by officers from three different states.

The chief added that one of the 18-year-olds is believed to be the shooter, though another suspect may also have fired a weapon. A sixth person is still being sought.

“In Bloomington, if you come here and murder people at our mall, you get one of these at at Christmas,” the newspaper quoted Hodges as saying while holding up an orange prison suit.

The governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, was “appalled” by the mall shooting. We are in touch with local officials so that we can give them the resources they need.

Police said that the victim was shot multiple times because of an altercation between the two groups that ended in a fistfight. 30 seconds was how long the incident lasted.

The mall was placed on lockdown in August after a reported shooting sent some shoppers running for cover, and two people were wounded last New Year’s Eve during an apparent altercation.

Since it opened in 1992, the Mall of America has been a tourist destination and community gathering spot. It bans guns on the premises, but shoppers have generally not been required to pass through metal detectors. The mall said in October it was testing a “weapons detection system” at one of its entrances.
