UNRWA staff should not starve for the sins of a few individual humanitarian workers, said António Guterres

Without the support of the United States and other major donors, the U.N. agency that aids Palestine would run out of money next month, the head of the UN stated on Sunday.

“The abhorrent alleged acts of these staff members must have consequences. But the tens of thousands of men and women who work for UNRWA, many in some of the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be penalized. They have dire needs for desperate populations and must be met.

The U.N. secretary general, António Guterres, said on Sunday that nine of the 12 accused employees had been fired, one had been confirmed dead and that the identities of the remaining two were being “clarified.”

The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council relief agency echoed that sentiment in a post on social media, writing, “Donors, do not starve children for the sins of a few individual aid workers.”

The World Food Program says 600,000 Palestinians are in need of humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

A deal is in the works to release Israeli hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a prolonged pause in fighting in Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis is worsening. According to Daniel Estrin from Tel Aviv, the exchange is similar to the November exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
