The news that it will crack down on password sharing was accidentally leaked last week. Then it hastily walked that back after a public outcry. The unlucky first victims of this policy are subscribers in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal.
In a post on their website, they said that they are ready to roll out different ways to address this issue in Latin America in the coming months.
Similarly, the currently available US support page about what Netflix considers a “household” is vastly different from the pages in Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru. On the US page, the company only describes people living in the same location with their account owner. There is more detail in the pages for the South and Central American countries on how to change a primary household, sign out of accounts in different locations, and what might cause a device to become blocked.
But when it comes to how Netflix will try to push users in the US or other countries to purchase sub-accounts for all of the exes, cousins, former roommates, and complete strangers who hitch a ride on our streaming accounts, it’s not ready to tell.
People in these countries will need to pay if they want to use their account, following similar rules in Latin America last year.
To use their account, subscribers to the Standard or Premium plan will have to pay for two other people outside of their household. The cost of adding a new person will be $7.99 Canadian dollars ($5.96), $7.99 New Zealand dollars ($5.09), and €3.99 ($4.30) and €5.99 ($6.45) in Portugal and Spain respectively.

The streaming giant, which suffered heavy subscriber losses last year, said in a blog post Wednesday that password sharing hurt its revenues and therefore limited its ability to invest in new content.

As part of the latest changes, users in the four countries will be asked to set a “primary location,” which ensures that all members of a household watch from the same account. The new page will allow members more control over who has access.

The service has been testing these restrictions in smaller countries to see if they work. The crackdown hasn’t come for the US yet, but that it will seems about as likely as Netflix canceling one of its shows after a single season. That is to say, very likely.
Buy-now, pay-later plans are all the rage, allowing customers to pay for stuff in interest-free installments rather than one bank-breaking chunk. cash-constrained consumers have become very fond of financial services like Affirm and Klarna, because they can buy things like food and gifts. Of course, they’ve got some problems. (Who doesn’t love the idea of not paying full price and then potentially getting wracked by debt months later?)
Apple wants to use its own proprietary system to play the game. Apple first announced the feature at its Developers Conference, but it has yet to be seen by the public. Recently, Apple expanded the testing of the plan to its retail employees, a move that has been preceded by other Apple service announcements. That could mean that the broader roll-out of its plan is imminent.
