The January 6, 2021, US Capitol Attack on Tucker Carlson: a case study of Jacob Chansley and the “QAnon Shaman”
Tucker Carlson aired new footage from the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack on his show on Monday, which included pictures of the rioter known as the “qanon Shaman,” and Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died following the attack.
CNN and other news organizations have also requested access to the security footage. McCarthy’s office said it is still working out the process to make the footage “more widely available” but did not comment further.
Carlson claimed that new Capitol security footage taken on January 6 shows Jacob Chansley, known as the “QAnon Shaman,” walking through the Capitol without pushback from police.
Prosecutors say that Chansley disobeyed that request and walked to the Senate floor. Video from that day shows an officer in front of the building asking rioters to leave and Chansley walking into the chamber with him.
In court documents, however, prosecutors say that Capitol Police officers repeatedly tried to engage with Chansley and others in the crowd, asking them to leave.
Capitol Police officers testified that after the first wave of rioters entered the building, they felt outnumbered and were afraid of the mob engaging with them. Members of the crowd were therefore able to walk into the building without much, or any, physical resistance, according to the officers.
Does January 6 Influence the Decay of the Dallas Pepper Spray Attack on Sicknick, a 17-Year-Old Black Man
The new Sicknick footage does not disprove the medical examiner’s conclusion that January 6 influenced Sicknick’s death, and it doesn’t erase the fact that Trump supporters assaulted Sicknick that day.
Sicknick was attacked with pepper spray by a group of people. An officer testified that she saw Sicknick in significant distress after he was sprayed. He died one day after a series of strokes. The DC medical examiner ruled that he died of natural causes but said, “all that transpired (on January 6) played a role in his condition.”
According to Carlson, the new tape of Sicknick was recorded after he was attacked on the frontlines of the Capitol steps, earlier in the day. CNN does not have access to the footage, and it is uncertain how Fox News determined that it is Sicknick in the video.
Two rioters pleaded guilty to crimes related to the pepper spray attack against Sicknick, though neither were accused of killing him. Julian Khater, who deployed the spray, is currently serving a six-year prison term. George Tanios was freed after spending five months in jail.
Fox News and the Capitol Police: Investigating the December 6th Capitol Police Attack on a Ulysses Senator: The Case of the Sicknick Families
“Every time the pain of that day seems to have ebbed a bit, organizations like Fox rip our wounds wide open again, and we are frankly sick of it,” the Sicknick family said in the statement.
The Justice Department announced Monday that over 1000 people are facing federal or local charges for their alleged involvement in the January 6 attack.
According to the department, 140 officers were assaulted at the Capitol that day, including 60 Metropolitan Police officers and 80 Capitol police officers.
“Last night, Fox News, with Speaker McCarthy as a willing, capable and powerful accomplice, aired one of the most shameful hours we have ever seen in the history — in the entire history of cable television,” Schumer said. Tucker Carlson is a propagandist pretending to be a newsman.
“The program conveniently cherry-picked from the calmer moments of our 41,000 hours of video. The commentary fails to provide context about the chaos and violence that happened before or during these less tense moments,” Manger said.
The chief also heaped praise on his force for their work defending the Capitol the day of the attack, writing: “You fought like hell on January 6 and risked your lives to protect the Constitution and everything this country stands for. You and our law enforcement partners saved every member of congress and their staff.
“With regard to the presentation on Fox News last night, I want to associate myself entirely with the opinion of the Chief of the Capitol Police about what happened on January 6,” McConnell told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday.
“It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that’s completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks,” McConnell told reporters.
Earlier Tuesday, Manger asked his statement be read at roll call meetings for rank-and-file and posted on all Capitol Police bulletin boards. A series of false statements were listed in a memo obtained by NPR.
“TV commentary will not record the truth for our history books,” Manger said in closing. The justice system can do it. The truth is on our side.
McConnell said that Manger’s comments are correct. The leader of the Senate stopped short of condemning the speaker, who gave the host access to the security footage. McConnell said how it was depicted was a different issue.
The chief of the Capitol Police, in my opinion, correctly describes what most of us saw on January 6. “That’s my reaction to it,” he said.
Schumer, Fox News and the Defamation of “Dangerous” Podolskii Accretion in New York
Already, Democrats had warned it was a dangerous move. Schumer spoke to reporters after McConnell’s remarks.
Schumer was referring to the case brought against Fox News and the fact that the network’s efforts have been outed.
