The Israeli Campaign for Ending the War on Iran and its Implications for Security and Economic Security in the Near-Inflationary Period
Israel can wind the war down alone without attacking Fordo. But that approach would leave at least a significant part of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program intact, leaving open the possibility that Iran might create a nuclear bomb that could be used against Israel.
It was Israeli officials that thought Mr. Trump would send American warplanes with high-tech weapons to destroy Fordo.
According to the Israeli military, over the last several days, Iran launched over 400 missiles and hundreds of drones. Israel has managed to shoot most of them down — although several have hit — but as the barrages from Iran continue, Israel is using interceptors faster than it can make them.
With Israel’s airspace closed and much of its economic life suspended, the war’s protraction will also come at an economic cost. The sooner the war ends, the faster commercial flights will return and businesses can resume full operations.
But experts say that this route is fraught with risk and that its effect may be limited. Itamar Rabinovich, a former Israeli ambassador to Washington, thinks that it probably won’t be as large as the U.S. can achieve. If the US were to do what it could, we would already have done it.
The tone of the Israeli news media on Friday also indicated continued domestic support for the Israeli campaign, as did new opinion polling. After Israel’s attack on Iran, Mr. Netanyahu’s party is in its strongest polling position since October 2023, when Hamas carried out the deadliest attack in Israel’s history.

Today, European diplomats are meeting Iran’s foreign minister in Geneva in an attempt to reach a diplomatic solution between Israel and Iran as they enter their second week of war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that Israel will continue attacking Iran’s nuclear sites even if Trump doesn’t take part. According to the independent group, hundreds of people have been killed by Israeli strikes in Iran. Iran has reportedly killed 24 people in Israel.
The White House has announced that Donald Trump will make a decision about Iran within the next couple of weeks. This latest move over the United States’ involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict comes amid growing concerns from some of his vocal supporters, who have expressed that they think Trump is betraying his “America First” principles. Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson warned that the president’s legacy could be on the line based on his decision. The decision’s delay and the criticism were not linked, according to the White House.

Doctors Without Borders: Medical Relief in the Los Angeles Region of Alto Baudin. From a Sacramento District Court Decision to the Californian National Guard
A federal appeals court in California has ruled that President Trump can maintain control over 4,000 California National Guard troops in Los Angeles. The decision blocks the Gov.’s efforts to regain control of the Guard. The Trump administration deployed the troops nearly two weeks ago in response to protests in LA, which were sparked by immigration raids in the area.

Doctors Without Borders began a two year project to cure psychic wounds in the remote area of Alto Baudin. The region has experienced years of violence due to conflicts between armed rebel groups and criminal organizations. The act of sewing pictures back together serves as a metaphor for healing and is involved in the project. To help people manage anxiety, depression and related mental health problems, the goal is to create rituals. Colombian photographer Fernanda Pineda documented the initiative in her photo series Riografias del Baudó. Take a peek at the photo collection here.
The Iranian War Between Israel and the U.S. in the Prevalence of the Second Israeli-Iran War: Is It Really Dominant?
civilians pay a heavy price as both sides deplete their arsenals Some 430 civilians have been killed by Israeli strikes in Iran, according to Iranian state media citing the Health Ministry, and more than 3,500 injured, with anxiety high as hundreds of thousands attempt to flee major cities. More than 1,000 people have been wounded in Iranian strikes in Israel, according to Israeli officials.
That could also significantly help the U.S. military should President Trump decide to directly enter the conflict, using massive bunker-buster bombs in an attempt to stop Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Earlier this week, the White House said that President Trump will make that decision within two weeks.
Israel is now able to strike whatever targets it wants, because it’s been given control of Iran’s air defense. Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News earlier in the week it was a free highway to Tehran for Israel.
Iran has to decide how many long range missiles it will shoot and what it will shoot at them. Few reliable estimates of Iran’s stockpile exist, but experts tend to think that Iran has used around a third to a half of what it has since it began firing at Israel more than 14-months ago. Israel also says it has taken out several munitions caches in recent days.
“We attack the launchers,” Netanyahu said in an interview on Thursday. The number of missiles they have, it doesn’t matter to them. I believe we’ve passed half of it.
“Israel will be put in a position of having to decide what to defend if this war drags on”, says Joe Truzman, an analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies that advocates for Israel and is critical of Iran.
Karako says his biggest worry right now is that, eventually, Israel’s missile interceptors could run out: “That would be a bad day. That would be a very bad situation.”
Tom Karako is the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
As the war between Israel and Iran enters its second week, there’s a specific kind of math that will determine just how much longer it can go — how many long-range missiles Iran has versus how many missile interceptors Israel has to shoot them down.
“I think it’s in Iran’s calculus that it wants to reach that point so it can pressure Israel more to give up on its ambition of destroying Iran’s nuclear infrastructure,” he says.
