California River Storm Prepared for An Overnight Snowfall and High-Temperature Temperatures in the 3-5 Years After the U.S. Giant Rainfall
At this time in a normal year, this type of atmospheric river storm would bring beneficial precipitation to the region. But given the unprecedented amount of rain and snow California has already received over a prolonged period, the storm will exacerbate flooding issues, bring down weakened trees and add more snow to already record levels.
More than 8million people are under a slight risk of excessive rain on the central coast.
The National Weather Service says saturated soils will cause trees to come down and cause more power outages during storms.
The weather service has been impacted by many storm systems, which has resulted in road being closed in the mountainous areas.
Near white out conditions are possible in parts of Northern California, which is near Mount Shasta where more than one foot of snow could fall. Winter storm warnings are in effect for this region and other parts of California through Wednesday.
Sections of Interstate 5 running from California into Oregon were closed Tuesday due to “severe winter conditions,” according to a tweet from the Oregon Department of Transportation.
With the rain and snow, highs are expected to be in the 50s, with some areas possibly tying or breaking daily records for the lowest high temperatures.
Multiday Los Angeles Weather Service Warning on Tornadoes and Snowfall, and Implications for Mountain Accidents and High Intensity Winds
The multiday storm comes as the state has already been slammed by at least 12 atmospheric rivers that have delivered a barrage of rain and snow in recent months.
“Rain rates could briefly reach a half inch per hour,” the National Weather Service office in Los Angeles warned. Also, can’t rule out small tornadoes over land.
The warning comes just one week after a rare tornado struck near Los Angeles, sending debris flying, collapsing the roof of a building and snapping a power pole.
Because the soil is so saturated from the unprecedented winter, huge impacts could still be felt, even though this system doesn’t have the extreme rain totals of the past.
The weather service warned that a storm with gale force winds and high intensity snow could cause an increase in the number of accidents in the mountains. There could be large storms in different parts of the country.
