Heavy hitters were rewarded, plus some surprises, from the Oscar nominations

The Oscars: Which Movies and Artists Have a Chance at the Academy Awards? What Happens When You’re Out of Business?

The Q and A.’s and cocktail parties are over. The votes have been cast. When the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday, we will find out which movies and artists will get a shot at an Academy Award.

Double-Digit Nominations: I expect “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” and the historical-crime tale “Killers of the Flower Moon” to each score double-digit nominations. The short lists released last month by the academy gave these movies a good chance of competing in technical categories such as score and sound. There are three songs from the film that advanced to the short-list phase, only two of which can be used in the movie.

Alexander Payne’s dramedy about a teacher, a cook, and a student forced to stay behind at a school during winter break has been a hit all awards season. The names of the key prizes that Paul Giamatti and Da-Vine Joy Randolph won will be revealed on Tuesday. It could be possible for director to get a nod for best picture as well.

The Times Digital Editor’s Choice Awards: Nolan, Gerwig, Pittsburgh and Domingo Nominated for Best Actor and Drama Actor

The lead nominees of “Oppen Hemingway,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” were considered by many to be the best of their genre. Nolan’s sprawling biopic. Gerwig is a musical. Scorsese’s pitch-black Western. Lanthimos’ fantasy was sumptuously designed. Each utilized a wide range of cinematic tools to tell the big-screen stories. “Killers of the Flower Moon” was the biggest-budgeted movie that saved streaming for months after its theatrical release.

Best actress was also closely contested. Carey Mulligan, Annette Bening, and other individuals were nominated for the same award. The actresses from “The ColorPurple” and “Barbie” were not included.

The actor category is one of the more competitive in the world. The nominees were Murphy, Giamatti, Wright, Cooper and Domingo. Ian Mckinnell was the first openly gay man to be nominated for playing a gay character in a movie, after he was nominated for his performance in “gods and monsters” in 1998.

“American Fiction,” a drama about a frustrated novelist, got five nominations on a good day. That included a nod for Sterling K. Brown for best supporting actor. Robert De Niro and Robert Downey Jr. were part of that category.

That group, which mirrored the Producers Guild Awards nominees, went much as expected and, as critics noted, a remarkably strong collection of films. For the first time, three of the best picture nominees were directed by women: “Past Lives” by Celine Song; “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet, who was also nominated for best director; and Gerwig’s “Barbie.”

Nolan’s three-hour opus, viewed as the best picture frontrunner, received nods for best picture; Nolan’s direction; acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt; and multiple honors for the sweeping craft of the J. Robert Oppenheimer drama. Though Nolan is regarded as the big-canvas auteur of his era, he’s never won an Academy Award, nor have any of his films won best picture. He could be his year.

Gerwig was surprisingly left out of the best director field. She was nominated for an award for her directorial debut. At the time, Gerwig was just the fifth woman nominated for the award. Since then, Jane Campion has won the best director award. In the 90s, the only woman to win the Oscar’s top filmmaking award was “The Hurt Locker”‘s mom, kathryn Bigelow.

The first Native American to be nominated for a best actress statuette was “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lilly Gladstone. For the 10th time, Scorsese was nominated for best director. The best actor was left out with Leonardo, but he did not get a nomination. The late Robbie Robertson, who died in August, also became the first Indigenous person nominated for best score.

“Poor Things,” a Victorian era fantasy about a girl’s sexual awakening, led the way with four nominations, including a nod for the direction of Yorgos Lanthimos and a nomination for Emma Stone’s performance.

The 10 films nominated for the best picture award were “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Holdovers,” “American Fiction,” “Past Lives,” “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone.”

The AP’s “20 days in Mariupol” was nominated for an Academy Award, as was Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing chronicle of the last international journalists left in the city after the Russia invasion. “To Kill a Tiger” was nominated along with “four daughters,” “bobi wine: The people’s president,” and “The Eternal memory.”

The 25th Academy Awards in Las Vegas: The Case for an Oscar-Major “Society of the Snow,” “The Zone of Interest,” and “Io Capitano”

“Society of the Snow,” “The Zone of Interest,” and “Io Capitano” are in Spain, Germany, and Italy, respectively.

Justine Triet, “Anatomy of a Fall”; Yorgos Lanthimos, “Poor Things”; Christopher Nolan, “Oppenheimer”; Martin Scorsese, “Killers of the Flower Moon”; Jonathan Glazer, “The Zone of Interest”

The best-picture collection of films — all of which played in theaters for at least a month, including Netflix’s “Maestro” — reflected the industry’s rebalancing after years of experimentation during the pandemic. Netflix came away with the most nominations of any studio with 18, but industry consensus has, for now, turned back to believing cinemas play a vital role in the rollout of most movies. Apple and Amazon, which in 2022 acquired MGM, have each made theatrical a priority.

Historically, blockbusters have helped fueled Oscar ratings. Through the pile-up of award shows (an after-effect of last year’s strikes) could be detrimental to the Academy Awards, the Barbenheimer presence could help lift the March 10 telecast on ABC. The ceremony was moved up an hour to 7 p.m., as Jimmy Kimmel returns as host.

“American fiction” includes “Anatomy of a Fall”, “The Holdovers” and “Killers of the Flower Moon”.

Annette Bening, “Nyad”; Lily Gladstone, “Killers of the Flower Moon”; Sandra Hüller, “Anatomy of a Fall”; Carey Mulligan, “Maestro”; Emma Stone, “Poor Things”

Bradley Cooper, “Maestro”; Colman Domingo, “Rustin”; Paul Giamatti, “The Holdovers”; Jeffrey Wright, “American Fiction”; Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer.”

Ten Best Picture Nominated Films for the Oscars: From “The Fire Inside”, to “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For My People”

“The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot”; “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie”; “What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”; “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from “Killers of the Flower Moon”; “It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony.

The nominees for the Oscar were announced on Tuesday morning. A man and a woman were nominated for playing a doll and baby. Ten pictures will vie to be considered best. Let’s talk about what happened.

A couple of hopefuls came up empty. When you start with 10 best picture nominees, there were many films that elbowed their way into major nominations. Origin, the latest film from DuVernay, was left out of the nominations, along with All of Us Strangers, the movie starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. The Color Purple musical adaptation was nominated only for Danielle Brooks’ supporting performance — a richly deserved nod, by the way.

Some of the acting nominees are new to acting. There are 10 first-time acting nominees: Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), America Ferrera (Barbie), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). They’re a fascinating mix of familiar good actors who you might be surprised are first-timers (Blunt, Domingo, Wright, Murphy), folks who did great work on television before they got much recognition in film (Ferrera, Brown, Brooks), and people who probably feel like relative newcomers to a lot of Oscar voters even though they are emphatically not (Gladstone, Randolph, Hüller).

International films continue to perform well. Alfonso Cuarn’s film made history as the only non-English language film to be nominated for best international film and best picture. But just since then, there have been four more: Parasite, Drive My Car, All Quiet on the Western Front and now The Zone of Interest, the disturbing study of a family living happily just outside the walls of Auschwitz, where the father is commandant. The short version? There is no longer any reason to think that a film with subtitles won’t be nominated for best picture.

John Williams and Thelma Schoonmaker were the originators of records. Williams, who has written much of the most beloved rousing movie music of the last 60 or so years, received his 54th nomination for the score of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It’s more nominations than any other living person has. And Schoonmaker, longtime collaborator of Martin Scorsese, became the most nominated editor ever when she was recognized for the ninth time, for his film Killers of the Flower Moon. She’s won for Raging Bull, The Aviator and TheDeparted. Both Williams and Schoonmaker are examples of essential collaborators without whom celebrated directors could not do their work, whether they’re making tragic epics or swashbuckling adventures.
