A new sentence for Harvey Weinstein convicted of rape, sexual assault, and sexual battery by restraint in Los Angeles and other high-profile cases

In Los Angeles, Weinstein faces multiple sexual assault charges that he has pleaded not guilty to last year, including four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by force and sexual battery by restraint in incidents dating from 2004 to 2013.

The New York Times and The New Yorker published their first stories about the man five years ago. The stories helped the movement expand, eventually taking down other powerful men.

Disgraced former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16 more years in prison by a Los Angeles judge Thursday. He was convicted there in December on three charges of rape and sexual assault. Separately, the 70-year-old is already serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault in New York — meaning that it is very likely that Weinstein will now spend the rest of his life in prison.

In Los Angeles, Weinstein is facing 11 charges that he sexually assaulted women in separate incidents over a span of nearly a decade, a larger case than the one argued in New York.

In 1997 she accused Weinstein of raping her. He denied her claims, though the two worked out a $100,000 settlement over the alleged incident. A separate lawsuit against Weinstein was later dismissed.

Only 24 reporters, including two sketch artists, can be inside the courtroom each day, according to the AP. In New York, dozens were allowed inside to monitor the trial.

Before he was kicked out of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, his films had been nominated for more than 300 Academy Awards and won 81 of them.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s spouse was one of Weinstein’s accusers. She told jurors that she had “nightmarish” encounters with him nearly 20 years ago when she was an aspiring actress. Weinstein invited her to a hotel in Beverly Hills where they would talk about her career. She graphically described how he shoved her onto a bed and raped her.

“My client, Jane Doe 4, shared her story not with an expectation to testify but to support all the survivors who bravely came forward,” Fegan said in a statement to CNN. “While we are heartened that the jury found Weinstein guilty on some of the counts, we are disappointed that the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on Jane Doe 4. She will fight against a system that allows abuse survivors to be shamed and traumatized in order to get justice.

“She intends to testify at his trial to seek some measure of justice for survivors and as part of her life’s work to improve the lives of women,” Fegan said.

A jury is being chosen in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Newsom will likely testify “on or around November 8” but this could change as the schedule is fluid, attorney Mark Firmani said.

Two years after Gutierrez’s original police report, multiple allegations against Weinstein went public, with investigative reporting by The New York Times and The New Yorker. More than 100 women came forward with harrowing accounts about the film executive.

In closing arguments Wednesday, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez called Weinstein a “titan” who used his power in Hollywood to prey on and silence women.

Weinstein had pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. He is prepared to continue fighting for his innocence, even though he was disappointed with the trial outcome.

The accusers were asked if they had any meetings with Weinstein in the past and if they had any stories to share about the accusations against him.

Each morning at trial, Weinstein was brought from a correctional facility and wheeled into the Los Angeles courtroom wearing a suit and tie and holding a composition notebook.

Siebel Newsom said last month that he was staring at her while wearing a blue tie, one of the most emotional moments of the trial.

On Thursday of last week, defense attorney Jackson asked jurors if they could “accept what (the Jane Does) say as gospel,” arguing what they said was a lack of forensic evidence supporting their claim.

The incident wasconsensual and Jackson said it was not the same as rape. And it’s important we make that distinction in this courtroom.”

Siebel Newsom described an hourslong “cat-and-mouse period,” which preceded her alleged assault. She, like other accusers, described feeling “frozen” that day.

Jane Doe 2, who was identified as Lauren Young, told her attorney Gloria Allred by phone that she was happy Weinstein was convicted on some counts despite there being a mistrial on her count, Allred said in a news conference after the verdict.

The lawsuit is for sexual battery, false imprisonment, and emotional distress. She is also seeking an undisclosed amount in punitive and other damages.

“To be willing to subject yourself to what could be a very brutal cross-examination. That takes a very special person to do that. And she is a special person. I’m very proud,” Allred said.

The truth is that we know of the evil behavior the person engaged in. He thought he was so powerful that people would … excuse his behavior,” Martinez said. “That’s just Harvey being Harvey. It is just Hollywood. Everyone did that for a long time. Everyone just turned their heads.”

The former producer — once one of the most inarguably powerful men in Hollywood — was brought to trial in California on seven charges of rape and sexual assault involving four women between 2004 and 2013. He was found not guilty of one charge and the jury could not decide on three other charges.

Elizabeth Fegan was disappointed that the jury could not decide on any of the charges related to her client.

Jurors will return to court Tuesday to consider aggravating factors to help determine the outcome of Weinstein’s sentencing hearing, according to the DA’s office.

“I am relieved that Harvey Weinstein has been convicted because he deserves to be punished for the crimes that he committed, and he can no longer use his power to intimidate and sexually assault more women,” Young said in a statement read by Allred.

Weinstein’s defense tried to discredit the women’s testimonies as “untrustworthy,” and during closing arguments, attorney Alan Jackson referred to them as “fame and fortune seekers.”

Other women identified as “Jane Doe” included a licensed massage therapist actress and model Natassia Malthe, who detailed an alleged attack inside a London hotel.

The accusers claimed that Weinstein’s genitalia had abnormalities, which were caused by a surgery he had in 1999, according to prosecutors.

Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez was a witness during the trial, testifying about his “prior bad acts.” In 2015, she filed a police report that spurred sex crimes prosecutors to investigate Weinstein. Gutierrez was part of a sting operation for the New York Police Department; she agreed to wear a wire to record Weinstein. The Manhattan district attorney at the time didn’t end up prosecuting him, but the recording was played for jurors in Los Angeles.

The New York Times and The New Yorker published allegations against Weinstein in October of last year. During his New York sentencing Weinstein referred to the Red Scare of the 1940s and 1950s as a time when Hollywood professionals were blacklisting for their perceived support of communism.

In London, he faces criminal charges of indecent assault of a woman in 1996. His attorneys are now appealing his New York verdict, so his Los Angeles conviction could mean he stays behind bars for the rest of his life.
