The Harpersville Project: Embedded Storytelling of Black Descendedants in Harpersville, AL During the Collapse of the Republican Party
The Republican party refers to the reddest county in the U.S. as being in the state of Alabama, and a new exhibit dedicated to black history is located in that area. It addresses what happened in Harpersville after enslaved people were emancipated, granted their freedom and not much else. NPR’s Picture Show spoke with Tyler Jones, who is part of 1504, the narrative studio behind the project. This studio has been working in collaboration with the Wallace Center for Arts and Reconciliation to reframe the narratives of Black descendant communities through embodied storytelling. The significance of transforming the plantation from 1841 into a reparative history and healing space was highlighted by Jones. Through photos and videos you can see an inside look at the project.

Iran is now considering how it wants to respond to the U.S. attack on its nuclear program, and how it might do that. Iran said in a video that the US can start this war, but we’ll be the ones who end it.
Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will not be dragged into a war of attrition, nor will it end the conflict until its objectives are achieved. Israel wants to degrade Iran’s nuclear program.
The decision to hit three targets in Iran was made by the Trump administration. U.S. officials say the strikes, which were carried out without congressional approval and without notifying top Democratic lawmakers, were intended to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The United States’ decision to intervene came a little over a week after Israel launched a series of strikes on Iran. U.S. officials say the American strikes devastated Iran’s nuclear program, but independent experts analyzing satellite imagery say it is far from destroyed. Here are four takeaways from the U.S. airstrikes on Iran.
Up First: A repository of underground information about Iran’s nuclear sites and activities in the era of Israel’s bombings, and what we can do about it
Good morning. You’re reading the Up First newsletter. You can subscribe to this newsletter for it to be delivered to your inbox and you can listen to the Up First podcast for the news of the day.
So far, the IAEA reports no such leaks. In the days before the bombs, it is thought that Iran moved their enriched nuclear materials. The United States has said that the target of its bombings was the facilities, so they understand they are not getting at the nuclear material.
We would prefer to see this done with diplomatic agreements where Iran would allow intrusive checks into its programme. The job of US and Israeli intelligence will be to assess the damage if that doesn’t happen. They’re looking at things such as intercepts, or trying to recruit people to reveal information.
The underground sites are more problematic. Three days after Israel bombed Natanz, I saw a small crater above the underground hall. Israel is thought to possess a type of earth-penetrator weapon that I could link it to. When it went in, it would leave a small crater and cause underground damage. The United States bombed it with a powerful Earth penetrator. It’s probably more extensive.
A lot of the damage is on the surface, so it’s a question of knowing what the building did [in terms of its role in the nuclear program]. We rely on our repository of information about the sites that are attacked. It is pretty straightforward.
There are few researchers who can assess the impact of the bombings. We have decades of experience with the Iranian nuclear programme, so we know their facilities and activities very well. And we have great access to satellite imagery — which we have to buy. We try to buy it every day. And we utilize analysts who have decades of experience to analyze these images. We also have people who have contacts with governments.
Although Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, experts have long assessed that Iran was close to having the capability of building nuclear weapons if it chose to do so. The US attacks came after Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran’s nuclear facilities. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, there is likely to be a lot of damage at the underground Fordow site.
