Josh Goldbard, the CEO of his current employer, confirmed Lee’s death. Lee joined MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency and digital payments startup, in 2021 as its chief product officer.

Bob Lee passed away at the age of 43 on Tuesday, and he is survived by a loving family and close friends, according to Goldbard. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature. Bob was the genuine article. He was made for the world that is being born right now, he was a child of dreams, and whatever he imagined, no matter how crazy, he made real.”

The man who was the victim of the Main Street attack was taken to the hospital, according to the press release. The victim died at a hospital.

Medics were summoned to the scene after officers rendered aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel.

Multiple local news organizations cited unnamed police sources saying Lee was the victim of the stabbing. The investigation is active and police have indicated no arrests have been made.

Preliminary police data reports 12 homicides in San Francisco this year, an uptick of 20% compared to the same time period in the previous year. In total, there were 56 homicides in San Francisco in 2022, which is the exact same number of homicides the city saw in 2021.

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Square (which is now called Block), responded to the news via a post early Wednesday on the decentralized social media app Nostr. “Heartbreaking,” Dorsey wrote. “Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Lee, a technology executive who created Cash App and was currently chief product officer of MobileCoin, was fatally stabbed in San Francisco early Tuesday, according to the cryptocurrency platform and police.

“From large contributions to Android at google, to being the first CTO of Square, in that time creating CashApp, and working with us here at Mobilecoin, Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on earth,” he said.

The founder of the San Francisco-based investment firm was quoted as saying that Lee’s loss was an immense tragedy.

“Deepest sympathies to Bob’s family, and to the entire tech community,” he said. “Remembering fondly when Bob gave an inspiring talk at our CEO Summit. We have lost a great innovator. Praying a suspect is apprehended swiftly.”

“This is an open and active investigation. “For that reason we’re not releasing further information,” Officer Niccole Pacchetti, public information officer, said in an email. “We will provide further details when they become available.”
