U.S. drone attacks against Russia: Insights from the joint efforts of the Ukranian military and the Russian-Iran military alliance
Ukraine also hit military air bases in Russia overnight, the Ukrainian military said in a Facebook post, writing that “strikes on military infrastructure will continue until the complete stop of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.”
Most incoming drones are electronically jammed by both sides. Even if a minority of them get through, they can cause serious damage. There are Russian drones that strike civilian areas in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said “Now is the time when America, Europe and everyone in the world together can stop this war by putting pressure on Russia.” “If someone lets the war take too much time, it’s complicity and responsibility.”
The attacks took place after Trump likened the fight between Russia and Ukraine to a dispute between children.
Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with the German Chancellor that he thought it would be better to let them fight for a while and pull them apart.
According to Trump, Putin warned him that he was going to retaliate for last weekend’s covert Ukrainian attack on Russian bases in Russia.
Ukrainian intelligence service, SBU, orchestrated the operation Spider’s Web, as part of a recurring theme: they frequently catch Russia by surprise, and invent new ways to wage war with drones.
“The Ukrainians are the ones innovating and trying these daring and creative attacks. Kelly Grieco, a researcher at the Stimson Center think tank in Washington, stated that the Russians were left scrambling to figure out how to defend against it.
Russia has more troops than Ukraine and is gaining ground. But Michael Kofman says Ukraine’s drones play a critical role in limiting this Russian advantage.
Michael Kofman with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is always struck by the pace of change in drone warfare.
Grieco said it is harder to move because of drones. “It’s not just being seen, but it’s also very quickly you’re able to act on it. There are a lot of people who say if you move on the battlefield in Ukranian you’re dead.
According to a Washington research institute, there is a history of collaboration between the Russians and the Iranians on military items. He just wrote a detailed report on the Russia-Iran drone partnership.
Early in the war, the Russians began buying an Iranian drone, the Shahed 136. The Iranian model is considered a work in progress. It’s propeller driven, relatively loud and slow, and sometimes described as a lawnmower in the sky.
But the main problem was Iran wasn’t making nearly as many as Russia wanted. So Russia paid Iran for the technology, and began making a Russian version domestically, known as the Geran.
“The most groundbreaking, revolutionary thing about the Geran is the mass production capability as well as the capability of striking targets at a long range,” said al-Ghusbi.

Ukraine says it made more than 1 million drones last year and plans to build well over 2 million this year. The Russians have not offered numbers, but Ukrainian officials say Russia is catching up quickly and is likely to produce a similar number.
